GLADSTONE LIBRARY
Designed by JA and Opsis Architecture, in partnership with Clackamas County, North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District (NCPRD), and the City of Gladstone, this project brings a much-needed library to a previously under-served community. Extensive community outreach and master planning for this project began in mid-2019 and the project broke ground in June 2023.
The library will include a children’s area with access to a secure outdoor garden, dedicated teen area, reading room, public computers, and administrative spaces for library staff. A priority for the community was a flexible meeting room that would accommodate larger groups and be accessible for multiple purposes after hours. To meet this desire, JA designed a meeting room with doors that connect to an outdoor plaza and easy access to restrooms that can be used after hours when the library is closed.
A mix of windows and clerestories bring extensive light into the library, which features a perforated metal sunshade that wraps the corner of the building. This design feature highlights the main entrance of the library and helps reduce glare while still providing access to views of the outdoors. The project is being designed to LEED standards, making use of passive solar heating and daylighting, as well as natural ventilation.
