Digital Sky
Digital Sky draws on the movements of the natural world, filling the space with calming patterns of light and color.
This digitally controlled ceiling installation fills the lobby with shifting hues, textures, and patterns that emulate the organic interactions of clouds, fire, or water. The installation can appear to inhale and exhale in rhythm with people as they pass beneath it, creating a gentle connection between movement, space, and light. Designed for a mixed-use building lobby, the installation blurs the transition from the natural world outside to the built interior, fostering a sense of welcome and emotional well-being. Drawing on principles of biophilic design, it mimics the open sky above and uses algorithms to simulate natural rhythms—waves, drifting clouds, and the dappling of light through a tree canopy.

The ceiling is composed of small translucent ripstop fabric panels, suspended vertically creating an abstract topographic form. Using parametric design tools, the lengths of the panels were varied to form flowing and billowing surfaces that animate with light.
The fabric grid is clipped into place and illuminated from above by a massive array of programmable LED screens. Together, fabric and light generate a constantly shifting atmosphere—color, pattern, and motion that invite pause, reflection, and connection within the heart of the lobby.
