Johnston Architects endeavors to create a work environment where equity and employee happiness are an essential part of the way we work. To that end, we became a JUST organization in 2018.
Diversity & Inclusion - Diversity is an essential component of the culture at Johnston Architects. We strive to create and maintain a business whose employees reflect the ethnic and racial makeup of our community. We will, to the best of our ability, seek to partner with and hire consultants who share our commitment to diversity. Each employee is expected to do their utmost to create a respectful workplace culture that is free of harassment, intimidation, bias, and unlawful discrimination of any kind. JA is committed to fostering and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion. We embrace our employees’ differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our employees unique.
JA has been 50% women-owned from its inception. Currently, over 60% of our employees at JA are women-identifying and over 60% of our leadership team, including partners, are also women-identifying.
Equity - JA is committed to fostering and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion. We embrace our employees’ differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our employees unique. JA strives for equity in pay across gender, race, and ethnicity. All employees performing the same or similar work or work of equal value will be compensated equitably. JA will conduct an annual pay equity audit by job title and will make changes to compensation when an audit yields unexplained variances in a pay class.
Stewardship - Supporting our community is a priority and we are committed to giving back to it, which is why in 2016 JA established a Social Responsibility committee, a voluntary group of JA employees to research and organize volunteer opportunities and charitable initiatives for the firm to participate in. Through volunteering, fundraising, and donating, JA not only contributes expertise, but gains connection to socially-responsible causes that help inform us as designers.
Through our work, JA aims to address issues for a sustainable future and the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the communities we serve. These issues include but are not limited to: reduced energy consumption, renewable energy adoption, utilization of local materials, development of sustainable sites, specification of low-flow water fixtures, and access to public transportation when available.
Employee Benefits - JA believes employee health is directly connected to company health, so we provide comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for our employees. We provide up to 8 weeks of paid new parent leave, and new parents have the option to use 12-18 weeks of state paid family leave, up to a maximum of 26 weeks of consecutive paid leave. We also value professional development, and provide employees with a $1,000 annual stipend for professional development activities.
