Jay Johnson
AIA, NCARB
Neither architecture nor lighting were part of Jay’s experience growing up in the Midwest, although creative problem solving can be seen as a throughline in his life and career. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Radio & Television Broadcasting from the University of Wisconsin — Platteville, Jay moved to Seattle, working as a theatrical lighting designer and technician. Expanding his interests to the burgeoning local film industry, he went off to work as a motion picture lighting technician on film, television, commercial, and music video projects, both locally and around the country. When the on-the-road lifestyle and intangible nature of the work grew tiring, and Jay redirected his attention to the pursuit of design. He returned to school, receiving his Masters in Architecture from the University of Washington, has spent 20 years focusing on public architecture that strengthens communities and creates vibrant civic spaces. Today, Jay spends weekends with his family, listening to music and fixing up their Victorian house — no long road trips required.
