Camas Library
Children’s Learning Hive

The City of Camas partnered with Johnston Architects to transform its beloved community library into a brighter, more inclusive environment for lifelong learning. At the heart of this renovation is the new Learning Hive, a reimagined children’s area that supports curiosity, creativity, and connection through early literacy design and flexible, engaging spaces.

In collaboration with Lango Hansen Landscape Architects, the redesigned courtyard becomes an accessible, year-round outdoor room, extending library programming into nature for reading, play, and community connection.

The new Learning Hive features areas for early literacy, school-age exploration, and STEM learning. Together, these zones form a hybrid environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and growth.

Guided by early literacy research and trauma-informed design, the Learning Hive combines calm tones with playful accents. Soft forms and natural textures create a space that is both soothing and imaginative.
