Oak Lodge Library

In collaboration with long-time partner Opsis Architecture, Johnston Architects designed the Oak Lodge Library, a 15,300sf library adjacent to the historic Concord Elementary School in Clackamas County. Together with the restored Concord School, the library forms a shared civic campus that supports learning, gathering, and community life.

Shaped by extensive community engagement, the project reflects local priorities for flexibility, environmental stewardship, and everyday use. Warm, sustainable materials and strong connections to the surrounding landscape reinforce its role as a welcoming civic place for the Oak Grove community.

Above the children’s area, dozens of leaf-shaped felt panels form a colorful acoustic canopy that softens sound and creates a visual landmark for young visitors.

Dowel-laminated timber provides structure, acoustic comfort, and a warm natural finish while advancing the project’s sustainability goals. Exposed throughout, the mass timber reflects the library’s commitment to craft and resilience.

Responding to strong community interest, the design incorporates a Seed Library that supports community gardening and local agriculture by inviting patrons to share and exchange seeds.

The teen area offers a range of settings for quiet study and small-group collaboration. Semi-enclosed seating zones, movable furniture, and varied table types encourage teens to adapt the space to their needs.
