Set near the confluence of the Willamette and Clackamas Rivers, the library’s design mirrors the rhythm of Main Street while establishing a distinctly civic presence. A perforated metal sunshade wraps the corner to provide shade and identity. The open entry plaza and generous glazing create a front porch for the community.
With a goal of Net Zero Energy, the library integrates deep overhangs, a dynamic solar screen, and a 52 kW rooftop photovoltaic array that offsets 100% of its annual energy use. Efficient systems, durable materials, and warm interior finishes ensure comfort, longevity, and health within a modest budget and footprint.
Every design decision grew from public input. Conversations with residents, librarians, and local leaders shaped a plan that centers on flexibility, accessibility, and connection to nature. The library features a light-filled reading room, dedicated children’s and teen spaces, quiet study areas, and a multipurpose meeting room with its own entry for after-hours use.
More than a building, the Gladstone Library is a place for everyone. It offers technology access, gathering spaces, and programs that nurture curiosity and connection. In scale, performance, and spirit, it transforms a small-town library into a lasting symbol of civic pride and environmental stewardship.
