Johnston Architects has collaborated with developer/builder Bill Parks of William Parks Inc. for over 20 years on multifamily projects throughout Seattle. Most are collections of townhomes or condos on hillsides and surrounded by landscaping, and most incorporate a water feature. Woonerfs and pedestrian paths are another common thread in the developments. Our latest collaboration is Lee Street Lofts, recently featured in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce.

When it came to buying land and building a place in the Methow Valley, Heidi Durham and Leslie Garrard had their parameters firmly in place.

Before the COVID Quarantine, Ray and Mary Johnston had a virtual interview with John Riha of Tiny Homes Magazine about what it was like to design - and live in - their delightful “tiny” Twisp Cabin. Founding partner, Mary Johnston, was featured in the May issue of the AIA College of Fellows Newsletter for her role as an AIA Fellows jury member in the selection and induction of the new 2020 Fellows.

Johnston Architects has promoted Jasmyn Flores to Marketing Specialist. As Marketing Specialist her responsibilities include social media management, website updates, proposal development and general support of marketing and business development activities.

David Fuchs, joining JA in 2015, has been promoted to Principal. David relocated to Seattle in 2006 and has established himself as a leader in multi-family and mixed-use urban housing projects.

Johnston Architects has expanded their ownership team as Jack Chaffin joins the firm’s Partnership. Chaffin’s promotion to Partner allows Johnston Architects to broaden their project typology, but his approach to understanding the potential of design helps shift the firm’s focus to the future.

The Central Washington AIA honors our White Salmon House with a merit award at this year’s ceremony. The home integrates the owner’s passions, drawing on their love of kayaking to organize the home’s plan. The kitchen, dining, living room, and main circulation spine pivot around a cedar-clad utility closet acting as a “rock in the stream,” mirroring the river obstacles the couple navigates.

Set alongside the creek from which it gets its name, the Wolf Creek House is a testament to its owners’ clear vision and collaborative process.
