Symmetry vs Equipoise

BY RAY JOHNSTON

Gables are sometimes asymmetrical. The off-center peak creates more space under the peak than to the side where the slope is longer and extends lower.

The off-center gable is dynamic and directional whereas the strictly symmetrical gable is static to some degree. In these cases, other building elements can help to balance the composition or to create equipoise. A larger window centered under the peak can balance the extended slope on the other side of the façade for example.

Symmetry and Equipoise are tools that designers can make use of to create interest and dynamism.
